讲座内容简介:Understanding the Puzzle of “Shortage of Migrant Labor” in the Pearl River Delta Region in China

This presentation will examine a recent puzzle of the “shortage of migrant labor” in China’s Pearl River Delta (PRD) region which hosts a large number of factories in China. Using data from several sources (censuses and surveys), we show that the “shortage of migrant labor” can be attributed to three main factors: changing destination choices among interprovincial migrants, a new trend of interprovincial return migration, and increased job transitions in the labor market. We argue that although the shortage of migrant labor may present challenges for employers, it is a sign of a healthy and efficient labor market in China which ultimately will improve the well-being of migrant workers. Another silver lining of this story is that the return of large numbers of interprovincial migrants from coastal regions helps alleviate an emerging social crisis of left behind family members (children, spouses, and the elderly) in rural China.

讲座内容简介:Gender Perspective on Life Satisfaction among Migrant Workers

Migration is a gendered process. Gender matters in the aspects of migration including the migrants' decision to move and their adaptation to the host society. The study of gender differences in adaptation of rural migrants in China can help us explore how cultural and social institutions shape migration outcomes as social differences between men and women are embedded in these institutions. In this study, we explore the differences in life satisfaction between male and female rural migrants in China. Life satisfaction is one of the major indicators of integration outcome among migrants. Based on recent data collected in Guangzhou, we found that female migrants have higher level of life satisfaction than their male counterparts. We also found that the opportunity for self-determination and the development of one's own social circle are strongly related to the life satisfaction of female rural migrants. In contrast, perceived social status, actual earnings, and perceived social status compared to local residents and villagers back home are important factors for the life satisfaction of male migrants. Implications of these findings are discussed.
